Solysafe Septal Occluder

The Solysafe® Septal Occluder is an implant for the minimal invasive closure of atrial septal defects (ASD and PFO). The implant is based on an idea from Dr. Laszlo Solymar, Assistant Professor for Pediatric Cardiology in Gothenburg, Sweden, and was developed by the Swiss engineering company Carag AG.

The Solysafe® Septal Occluder is a self-centring implant with two folding patches that are fixed to eight metal wires. The wires are united at both ends in a wire holder. The implant can be introduced in its stretched state using a 10 F introduction sheath. Once positioned in the defect, the wire holders are pushed together, whereby the wires snap into a second stable position and take on the indicated flower-shape. The patches are tensioned by this snapping action, thereby covering the defect. A click-mechanism holds the wire holders together.

The Solysafe Septal Occluder has been approved in 5 sizes in Europe, Asia and South America since 2007.

Work on obtaining approval for a new implant which is degradable in structure but has the same benefits as Solysafe has now been intensified.
